Sharing accessorizing ideas is my favorite part of decorating! This is where your personality and style can come out in the unique things you choose. Accessorizing is the jewelry of the outfit so to speak. Done correctly, and you have the “wow factor”.
When I visit clients for their first consultation, there are some common accessorizing mistakes that are pretty predominate. Most people do an excellent job choosing their furniture, wall decor, and rugs. But, when it comes to accessorizing, this becomes an area of frustrating for many people! So, not to start off on the negative, but here are the four very common accessorizing mistakes I see most often.
A Few Easy Accessorizing Ideas and Tips
Tip 1#
“Decorating in 3’s”
One of the decorating rules I use constantly is “decorating in 3’s”. It helps to keep things neat and uncluttered.
Tip 2#
Use Varying Height With Your Accessories
Using different heights in your accessorizing decor adds height and interest. You can use a few books to give height to an accessory. Books are fantastic decor items. I shop at antique stores for old books. They can be inexpensive and add great character and charm.

Entryway Table
Here I used my “Decorating in 3’s” tip to keep the entryway table clean and uncluttered.
This entryway only need a few little changes. I like to hang a mirror in an entryway. Usually a dining room or office is across from the entryway, and if so, the idea of a cool chandelier reflecting in the mirror makes the space even more light and inviting.
I moved a few of their accessories around, like placing the books under the greenery for added height. A lamp is a a must for me, and using 40 watt bulbs to create a low and ambient light gets the job done just right!

Adding Botanicals to Your Accessorizing
Adding botanicals to your accessories is a great way to bring warmth and softness to a room. Learn how to make your own silk flower arrangements.
A little greenery always warms any space!
Kitchen Accessorizing Ideas
I like to keep the kitchen decor simple and elegant. It is very easy to overdo kitchen decorating ideas, and have too many items displayed on your countertops.
Coffee Table Decor
Living Room Accessories
The living room is such an easy room to get cluttered with just our own daily items that land in this room. So keeping table tops uncluttered from too many accessories is important.
Bedroom Accessorizing
Whether you are accessorizing a master bedroom or a guest bedroom, keep things simple and elegant. Less is more in these rooms. You want to create comfort along with serenity and calm.
Even in a
How neat of an idea is this? ReFresh Home created an adorable coffee station in a guest room! I love it! If I was the guest, I’m afraid it would be difficult to get rid of me!
Bathroom Accessorizing Ideas
If you have a garden tub, a silver tray filled with whitewash clothes, a jar of bath salts, and a pretty flower makes your bathroom feel like a spa. Keep bathroom decorating ideas simple and uncluttered.
This is a guest bathroom I decorated for a client. Adding baskets is a great way to keep things organized on a bathroom countertop. And, of course, a little greenery and a sweet silver bunny make a happy room!
Bookshelf Accessorizing
Bookshelves can be extremely challenging when it comes to accessorizing! It is about finding the right balance between accessories and books! Here is a whole page all about accessorizing a bookshelf.

Pillow Love
Another quick accessorizing tip is pillows! I don’t know how many clients I have visited who were in desperate need of new pillows! There are too many sad and flat pillows out there.
Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall…
Learn to accessorize with mirrors. Mirrors make a room look larger, add light, and can change the feel of an entire room.

These all look amazing. I have such trouble with accessorizing. Plus my husband always sits something down and ruins the whole thing. LOL!

Love this post! You really have a good eye. I always have to confirm with my mom when styling because something always just looks a little “off” and she usually finds it immediately! I’m posting an entryway sneak peak on Thursday, and I’d love your opinion 🙂 Thanks for sharing at “From Dream to Reality” link-up! Pinning and tweeting 😉

I’m so glad I subscribed! Your hospitality intro caused a tiny ache in my heart for simpler times and genuine kindnesses. I didn’t chop wood, but as a child growing up on a cotton mill village in Ga.,I did haul in many buckets of coal. I’ll be forever grateful for my Grandmothers influence. Decor was not high on her must do list, but our painted and waxed floors shined around cotton rugs she’d knotted. She may have operated a cotton loom at the mill, but she could pour tea with as much grace as a queen from her prized S&H green stamp tea pot. Her motto, Feed anyone who comes in your house, because child, you don’t know the last time they ate! Thanks for the memories.
