Hello, there! This post is all about nursery room ideas! Are you expecting a baby? I am so happy for you! This is the most wonderful time, and if you are feeling overwhelmed with exactly what baby nursery design ideas to choose, I would love to help you, and relieve some stress.
Gone are the days when the nursery design was either pink, blue, or yellow. The doors are wide open to all colors, all themes, and all styles.
You may be asking:
Where in the world do I start with my nursery room ideas?
As a decorator, when designing any room, I tell my clients decorating a room is a layering process. Start with the most expensive decor item first.
Easy Planning List
“A good plan is like a road map: it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there.” H. Stanley Judd
We will get into tons of details and ideas for your baby room, but for right now, we have to start with a plan. So, please grab a piece of paper, or notebook, because it is time to make a list!
The Layering Process
- Nursery Furniture
- Baby Bedding
- Window Treatments
- Paint Color
- Wall Decor
Do you have your nursery furniture already? Then I would decide on the bedding next. The bedding will be the jumping off point for the rest of the room.
You will decide on window treatments and paint colors based on your bedding choices.
Pull out colors from your bedding like I did in the example above. You can also take a swatch of fabric to the paint store and they can easily match it.
Design Thought: Babies grow so fast. Think about paint colors that can transition from baby to toddler.
Choose some fun modern colors for your bedding. The bed design above is so playful and fun. The pom-pom trim adorable! This beautiful bedding design is by interior designer, Caitlin Wilson.
The next layer is deciding on your window treatments. Before you make a decision on fabric and style, ask yourself “Do I need drapes to have a function besides adding style to your room?” For example, do you already have blinds, if so, your curtains can be stationary. Or, do they need to be light-blocking draperies moveable on a rod in order to open and close easily.
Do you want long drapery panels, or a simple window valance? Decide on the style first, and that will help you determine how much fabric you will need for your windows.
Baby room accessories, and wall decor is the last layer of design. It is the jewelery of the outfit. Just because accessories and decor are the last element, does not mean that making good choices is any less important.
I’m going to be honest. I don’t always think baby room wall decor is easy to find! Many of the things I really love are too pricey! And, if they are in an affordable price range, my love factor goes way down.
If you are decorating on a budget, you have to get creative and be willing to roll up your sleeves and tackle some DIY projects.
So whether you are looking for baby boy nursery themes, or baby girl room ideas, the key is having a good plan, and executing it!
Enjoy this time. Whatever choices you make, they will turn out beautiful! Ready to get started?

This is good to know! I’ve never really been one of those girls to daydream and plan for weddings and baby nurseries, so it was a surprise when we found out I was pregnant. I’ll take this into consideration when I’m planning to decorate, thank you 🙂
