Why is master bedroom decorating so important? The master bedroom is the first thing we see in the morning and the last thing we see when we close our eyes. It is our refuge; a place to finally take a deep breath and relax.

Unfortunately, so many master bedrooms are cluttered and disorganized! Bed linens are mismatched and worn, dressers are cluttered, and things are stacked in spots all over the floor.

So, if there is one room you really need to make your priority, it is this room!!! You deserve to relax and unwind and have a little time to yourself. So, let’s go over a few tips and bedroom makeover ideas to help you create your own refuge. After all, you spend 8-10 hours a day in this room! Move “master bedroom decorating” up on your priority list!

Eight Master Bedroom Decorating Ideas and Tips

1. The number one tip I have is DE-CLUTTER AND ORGANIZE. Nothing should be on your floors except furniture. Use storage boxes if you must keep things under your bed.

2. Your bed is the focal point of the room. Dress it up! Allow yourself the luxury of good sheets. Don’t feel you have to commit to a “bed set”; mix and match. Just stay in the same color tones. It takes a little work and time, but shop around.

3. When purchasing bedroom furniture, you don’t have to create a matching set. Buy interesting individual pieces. Again stay within the basics: bed, nightstands, dresser, chest, and if room allows a comfortable reading chair.

4. Whether accessorizing your chest or dresser, stick with the basic “three” rule. Use only three items to decorate with, but keep them in scale with the furniture.

5. Draperies are a must in a bedroom. Whether you do long drapery panels or just a window topper, select a fabric that goes well with your bedding.

6. Keep wall art simple and proportioned well. If you have a larger wall, don’t be afraid to purchase one large piece of artwork.

7. When choosing paint colors; whites, neutrals, or soft pale hues tend to create a more restful ambiance. Especially, if you are trying to incorporate romantic bedroom decorating ideas.

8. If you decide you cannot live without a TV in your bedroom, it is best to choose cabinetry that conceals it. That way you maintain a restful look in the room.

Master Bedroom Makeover

I love when a client requests a master bedroom makeover! This week the JD’s team completed an architectural style master bedroom makeover. The makeover was from top to bottom! The homeowner was ready for new paint color, new furniture, drapes, bedding, lamps, and accessories. When I begin designing for clients, the most important aspect is to be an attentive listener and understand what the client is envisioning for their room.

Most people get overwhelmed when it comes to figuring out how to pull a room together. Designing a room can become difficult and confusing. Every design decision layers on top of the next decision. Have you ever updated one item in a room, and then all of a sudden everything else looks dated?

Choosing the Right Furniture

It is always best to start with your most expensive item as your design foundation. So, for this master bedroom makeover, the furniture selection needed to be the first decision. My client’s style would be described as “Modern Farmhouse”. Their bedroom furniture is from our architectural furniture line at JD’s. For this architectural master bedroom makeover, the upholstered sleigh bed is the focal point. Next, we made up the bed with beautiful white bedding, a beige colored quilt folded at the foot of the bed, and shams in a toile pattern.

This master bedroom was large enough to accommodate the furniture choices, and still had enough room for an occasional chair. The chair is in the same hues as the upholstered bed.

When designing for both a man and woman, you have to keep a delicate balance. Men don’t want a room to be “frou-frou”, and they really can complain if there are too many pillows on the bed! Women want a master bedroom that is soft and relaxing. This furniture appealed to the masculine side, and the soft bedding and drapes softened the room and made it quite romantic.

Draperies Make All The Difference

Speaking of drapes, the drapery fabric had soft muted colors, in green, blue, and cream hues. The drapes went beautifully with the paint color in the room. If you need advice on draperies, just visit my post about “window treatment ideas“. The color in the room is called “Sea Salt” by Benjamin Moore, it is a very soft and soothing color.

I’ve said it before, but drapes make a world of difference in any room. These drapes were put on a thin French Return rod. Like my mother would say to me about makeup, “A little can go a long way”. This is my philosophy on drapes and drapery rods, you don’t have to go overboard to make an amazing statement.

After the guys got the bed put together, and moved all the furniture in, us girls were ready to decorate with accessories. Accessorizing a room brings me so much joy. Adding the final touches to a room is like adding jewelry to a great outfit!

For the bedside table lamps, I chose lamps with a little bit of “bling”. It is important to have a contrast between your table and lamp. What I mean by that, is if your table is wood, don’t choose a wood lamp. A better choice would be either a ceramic lamp or a mercury glass lamp. A gorgeous canvas of Paris was purchased from Homegoods. The canvas had soft hues and was the perfect size for above the bed.

A pretty orchid floral was placed on the dresser, along with unique accessories. The chest of drawers was decorated with a lamp, and mirrored bookends which added a little more “bling”. Take a look at the two round mirrors I found at Hobby Lobby! Hanging them vertically staggered takes up more space on the wall, and worked well with the vaulted ceilings.

This job was so much fun, and our clients were super happy. My hope is that these design ideas will give you inspiration for your own master bedroom makeover. Have a good week!

Bedroom Decorating Ideas

I drool over Pinterst photos of bedroom decorating ideas! Don’t you? I attended a few Parade of Homes this past fall and saw some outstanding bedrooms. I took enough photos to be annoying to those around me. Oh well. Let’s take a look!

I love, love, love the colors used in this bedroom! The pillows are spectacular! I especially love the headboard and the wooded shutters on the windows. This room was designed by JFY Designs of Nashville. Well done!

What a soft and serene bedroom. The mix of gray and white linens is lovely.

How about having a trunk at the end of your bed instead of a bench? This is one cool trunk! You could find a similar trunk at the flea market or an antique store. This stunning bedroom was designed by Davishire Interiors.

Isn’t this bedroom wonderful! I love the colors, the bedding, the sliding door into the closet, and most of all the chandelier! This fantastic design is by ReFresh Home. Their style is exactly what I love!

Blue, blue blue…..sigh. I am not normally a “blue” girl. But this bedroom is charming. It reminds me of the Williamsburg blue dishes an old friend of mine displays in her kitchen.

My Favorite Bedroom Decorating Idea

In my dream world, this would be my bedroom. But, alas, I have a husband and two dogs. It just wouldn’t work. This is another fabulous bedroom from Refresh Homes. The ceiling is stunning! I don’t believe I would ever leave this bedroom if it were mine.

The long white drapery panels paired with the roman shades gives the entire room a romantic and dreamy feel.

The tufted upholstered headboard and cream and white linens, makes a bed fit for a queen.

This elegant crystal light fixture hanging under the distressed wood ceiling is magnificent. To me, rustic and elegance make a perfect marriage.

Well, I’m glad you stopped by! This page is full of ideas to get you started on the road to creating your own special sanctuary!

So, what defines romantic bedroom decorating ideas? How do you create a romantic bedroom? Before you even begin with your interior decorating ideas, you have to take a long look at your bedroom and analyze what you like and what you don’t like about your room.

Decorative pillows make all the difference! You can use decorative pillows with sayings, ruffles, roses, or embroidery. Just choose pillows that have character and interest. This is where you may need to spend some extra money. I love to look on Etsy for decorative pillows.

Nothing says romance like lace. Incorporate some lace into your design, whether you use it in your pillows, decorative pillow shams, or in a bed throw.

I don’t believe furniture has to be expensive to be beautiful. Shop the flea market, garage sales, or local antique shops for second hand furniture. Learn all about furniture makeovers, from painting furniture to DIY headboard ideas.

Find a unique side table and paint it white. Search garage sales, or flea markets for small tables, and remember they don’t have to match!

Lighting

One of my biggest pet peeves, is bad lighting. Now, I know we all can’t have this fabulous chandelier in our bedroom, but, change out your light fixtures if they are old and outdated.

Make sure you have low-watt bulbs that create soft ambiance.

Flower Arrangements

Flowers are so romantic! There are so many silk flower arrangements now that look real! Choose some with soft white and cream flowers.

If a large silk floral arrangement isn’t for you, then a simple glass vase with real flowers is the perfect idea! It is amazing how seeing a vase full of flowers cheers me up! Pick some flowers from your yard, or buy one or two stems from the grocery store. I found this vase for $2 at the craft store.

Window Treatment Ideas

Long flowing drapes are so beautiful in a bedroom. Whether they are custom made or ready made panels doesn’t matter. When hanging your window treatments, if possible, hang them above your window to give the illusion of a larger window.

Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Make your guest room inviting and peaceful!

Hello friends! I would like to share some guest bedroom decorating ideas with you that I think are easy and fun to do! My middle son is getting an apartment, and the boy’s room is now MINE! So, turning it into a peaceful retreat for my guests (or me) was a fun journey!

Okay, before we go on I will show you the before photo. I must say my daughter, (our last chick left) was very upset over the change. I honestly felt kind of bad. For a minute or two.

Please note, the popcorn ceiling. Yes, I learned how to remove popcorn from the ceiling, and it is not a fun project. I also removed the 17 year-old wallpaper. Again, not an easy project!

Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas That are Essential

Making your guests feel welcomed is not just about having the best guest bedroom decorating ideas. It is about learning to create a room that is calm, peaceful, and relaxing. I researched a lot of different small bedroom decorating ideas because this room is pretty tiny!

My number one essential priority is having a guest room that is uncluttered! If your guest room serves a dual purpose, such as a home office, make sure everything is in order when your guests arrive.

Make a comfortable bed! Who can resist a bed made with soft linens and fluffy pillows?

If room allows, have a chair in your guest room.

Provide necessary items such as a make-up mirror, toiletries, and an alarm clock for your company. Add a small vase of flowers to make them feel extra special.

Easy Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas

I like to mix and match my bedding. I find that you can save a lot of money this way. My quilt came from T.J. Maxx, and the charcoal colored pillows came from Target.

This simple bed skirt is from the Rachel Ashwell line at Target.

The details make all the difference in bedroom makeover ideas. Adding a smaller pillow in the front of your larger pillows is like adding jewelry to your outfit. It just completes the look.

My guest room is small. So when I happened upon this little vintage dresser I was thrilled!

The shop owner had already painted this piece, and added special hardware.

A large mirror is a must for your guest room. I found this one at our local T.J. Maxx store. I’m not sure what I would do without that store!

I got really really lucky, and was given this antique headboard from a client. I love it. This headboard was full size. I purchased a queen size bed for our room. Instead of figuring out how to make the headboard fit the queen bed, my husband just attached the headboard to the wall!

If room allows, add a chair for your guests. This little chair was a flea market find for $15. I painted it white and added a pillow that probably applies more to me, more than to my guests.

Gray and orange, how pretty! This is a room I decorated for a special client.

This is a beautiful guest room of an acquaintance of mine. I absolutely love the light fixture!
