Hello friend! Are you looking for ideas about how to decorate above your kitchen cabinets? A constant question that gets asked quite a bit, when discussing kitchen makeovers, is what is the proper way to decorate above the kitchen cabinets. So, I thought it was time to share my top 3 tips on decorating about your cabinets.
I remember, probably over 20 years ago when I decorated above my cabinets. I couldn’t stuff enough ivy above the cabinets! There wasn’t an inch of cabinet space where there wasn’t decor or greenery. Now, when I am decorating for clients and choosing items for above their cabinets, I keep things pretty minimalist and simple.
3 Tips on How to Decorate Above Your Kitchen Cabinets
Keep Your Style Cohesive
Whatever decorating style is your favorite, whether it is farmhouse decor, traditional, modern, coastal, or any of these styles, keep your decor choices consistent. This helps to maintain and create a pattern that flows.
Group Decor Items in Vignettes
Instead of placing home decor items all the way across the top of the kitchen cabinets, place your home decor items in groups. For example, you can begin by grouping your items in the corner. Move down the cabinets a few feet and add another collection of home decor items.
Use Home Decor Items With Varying Heights
If you choose your decor items that have varying heights, this will give visual interest above your cabinets. Many times I will place the tallest item in the back of my vignette and bring the smaller items in front. Don’t forget to add greenery to some of your vignettes. Greenery adds softness and color.
You can also choose an architectural piece like the one in the photo above. The piece was short and long and filled up a lot of space above the cabinets. The architectural piece also had a unique open design which added more visual interest. Don’t be afraid to decorate outside of the box! Just remember to keep things cohesive.
Adding greenery above the cabinets can make a huge difference! It adds a pop of color and softness. But this is the one area that collects so much dust!! So, I have a solution for cleaning greenery super easy and fast. Spray your greenery with foaming bath cleaner. Let it sit for a bit, and let the bubbles begin to eat up the dust. Then simply spray off with water and let your greenery dry! Fast and easy!
