Faux Brick Wall Created From Brick Paneling

I am so excited to show you the faux brick wall I created for the  new section of our store, JD’s All About Home.  We wanted to add character to the walls, but still remain on a tight budget.

Yes, this is brick paneling!  Yes, you can do this DIY project yourself!  Yes, this is an inexpensive project!  So, let me tell you the steps to creating this wall, and if you would rather watch a video tutorial just scroll down to the bottom of this post.

Creating a Faux Brick Wall

We purchased our brick paneling from the home improvement store.  One 4′ x 8′ sheet costs around $25.  You can use finishing nails or an industrial staple gun to hang your paneling.

Step One:  Roll-On Texture

The first step is to apply roll-on texture.  Roll-on texture comes in different textures.  Make sure to choose the “smooth” one.  Use a large roller and begin rolling on your wall in an up and down motion.

Step Two: Scraping the Texture

Roll a small section at a time, then using a putty knife, go up and down over the roll-on texture.  This immediately creates a time-worn look, and helps push the roll-on texture into all the grooves.  Continue with rolling a small section at a time, and scraping in an up and down motion until you finish the entire wall.

Step Three:  White Washing Your Faux Brick Wall

If you don’t want a lot of the red brick to show through on your wall, then white washing with paint will do the trick.  White washing is basically adding paint that has been watered down.  I mixed white paint with a dab of beige.  I did not want a stark white faux brick wall.  By adding a little beige to the mix, this created an aged look to the brick.

Step Four:  Applying Venetian Plaster

Once the roll-on texture is completely dry you are ready for step three.  This is my favorite part!  Venetian plaster is very thick, and reminds me of cake icing.  You can purchase a gallon at any home improvement store.  I used Venetian plaster to create even more depth and texture for my faux brick wall.

Again, use your putty knife and apply the Venetian plaster to half of a brick.  Venetian plaster is very white, and this will add highlights to the entire wall.  Only add the plaster to a few bricks.

You can tell in the photo above, how sparingly I used the Venetian plaster.  But, it highlights the wall so beautifully!

Step Five:  Sealing Your Wall

IMPORTANT:  Do not use Polyurethane!!!  Even though it stated it does not yellow, when I applied this to a section of the wall, it TURNED IT YELLOW.  I was devastated!  I had to begin that section of the wall all over.

This is what you want to use! It will not yellow the wall!  Simply roll on the Polycrylic and you are finished!
